Feature Artist - Satoko Fujiwara
Satoko's works show a unique synthesis of diverse cultural influences. Her wheel-made mugs, bowls and tablewares are designed as "art with function" to bring a spark of joy to the user every time they are held.
Her exceptional glazes and trailing slip motifs make the food and beverages "pop". They are made from iron-rich red clay, spun on a potting wheel. A white clay 'slip' is applied on the raw clay, then trailing-slip decorative motifs are applied by hand that evoke the living nature around her home and kiln. After bisque firing the glaze is applied that gives the subtle green tones, and when fired finally the minerals in the clay appear as a reddy blush through the white slip and glaze.
Before formal training in pottery Satoko explored art forms such as bonsai and traditional Okinawan dance, experiences that still flow into her ceramic creation. Having received formal training and apprenticeship in Kasama, Ibaraki, she established an independent kiln in the nearby green hills in 2012.
